Love the Smell of Rain? There’s Science behind this

Ever wondered why the scent comes from the soil, especially after a rain? A scientific secret was also revealed when the cause was considered.

rain smell

The fragrance emanating from the soil before or after the rains is similar to that produced by bacterial streptomycin but why is this the end? To answer this, Paul Beisher and colleagues at Swedish Agricultural University have looked at soil samples from several locations with streams of strepticeps.

At first, it was thought that the special smell they emit is poisonous to some of the bacteria in the group. But now it is known that bacteria emit this smell so that they can attract insects and crabs without the backbone so that they can approach the bacteria and take them further. This process is accelerated after the rain.

For this, a type of worm spring teal found in the soil was first placed near the soil with Streptomyces, but when bacteria were removed from the soil, the insects did not explode toward the soil.

On the other hand, streptococcus was added to the soil and this time spiders and large insects were called to it.

After that, they were also tested by applying electrodes to the insects’ nerves. In the presence of two types of striatal mice, geosmin and 2 MIBs, the nerve cells of the insect showed an interest. It can be said that springtails are attracted to these bacteria, and they stick to their body and spread far and wide.

But the toxic effects of some Streptopic Mice have no effect on these insects in the process, and perhaps the reason is that insects have learned to tolerate their negative effects while constantly in this environment.
