It may be recalled that on May 16 last year, the US government barred Huawei from working with a Chinese company by blacklisting it. Now on Friday, an article from Google has been published on the Support Page explaining the situation in Huawei.

The company’s legal director for Google Play and Android, Tristan Ostrowski, wrote in the article: ‘Google has to work with Huawei’s new devices or preload or download Google Apps including Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Play Store, and others.’

According to Google, this situation is very confusing and it is difficult for people to understand which products are prohibited from using Google services.

Google made it clear that updates to the Huawei phones released on or before May 16 are likely to continue, but the phones introduced will be certified (unverified). Google is unable to provide them with security updates or Google Play Protocol software preload.

The Company warns users using new Huawei phones that they should not attempt to load sideways in Gmail, YouTube, Play Store or other Google software in these certified devices as the company cannot guarantee that they will be genuine or Malware.

Google avoided discussing the political aspects of Huawei sanctions and advised people to avoid access to the company’s popular services on the backdoor route.

Reuters reported recently that major smartphone makers like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are working together on a platform that works alike Google Play Store.

These companies are under the aspect of the Global Developer Service Alliance (GDSA), and the move appears to be an attempt to challenge the Google Play Store’s international monopoly.

Google Play Store is banned in China and Android users download apps from various app stores, most of which handle different companies like Huawei and Oppo,

But outside of China, Google Play Store is dominated, allowing developers to upload their software, on different platform.

Third-party app stores face difficulties as a result of this monopoly, and are now being challenged by the GDSA platform.

The GDSA’s Prototype website states that its services are planned to be introduced in 9 countries and territories including India, Indonesia, Russia and Malaysia.

According to the report, these Chinese companies are very strong in different regions, such as Xiaomi in India or Huawei Europe, and during the last quarter of last year, these companies sold 40% of smartphones worldwide.

This new platform will make it easier for developers to upload their apps to all stores simultaneously.

Google Play Store’s global dominance is an even bigger problem for Huawei, which lost Google apps and services, including a Play Store license, due to US sanctions last year.

Due to this issue, Huawei decided not to push its flagship phone Mate 30 for sale globally, while also announcing it to work on its operating system Harmony OS and as an alternative to Google services. Huawei invested one billion dollars to establish mobile services.

The Play Store is very important in Google’s revenue sources, which earned $ 8.8 billion worldwide last year.

Dutch navigation and digital mapping company TomTom has signed a deal with Huawei, which will allow the Chinese company to use Maps and other services for its smartphones. Talks between the two companies had been going on for some time, but this has now been made public.

Needless to say, Google Maps is a very important application that comes preloaded on Android phones, which gives users a detailed map of almost every corner of the globe while also being used for navigation.

Dutch company TomTom has been developing navigation software since the ’90s. This agreement is an important advance from Huawei’s attempt to provide Google services to alternative users.

Because at present the Chinese company’s phones have an open-source Android operating system but Google Play Store, Maps, YouTube and other services are not available. Harmony was introduced to Android’s replacement operating system following US sanctions by Huawei last year. In the first week of January, Huawei announced a $26 million concession in developing apps for the company’s own App Store.

Huawei was blacklisted and called by the Trump administration a threat to US national security, while its devices can be used for espionage; the Chinese company has always denied the allegations.

TomTom is now focused on software updates, rather than selling physical devices. TomTom has started a new chain of digital map-linked businesses around the world.
